Spring on the Wing
Plan a colorful getaway to Michigan's butterfly houses
From glasshouse jungles full of blue morphos to bug zoos with a gentle, hands-on vibe, Michigan’s butterfly houses make easy day trips for families—especially in spring, when a few of the state’s biggest exhibits burst to life. Use this guide to plan now and keep a few summer-only spots on the radar for your warm-weather travels.

In Grand Rapids, where Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park runs one of the nation’s largest temporary butterfly exhibitions each spring, “Butterflies Are Blooming” fills a tropical conservatory with thousands of free-flying butterflies and moths; expect peak flutter mid-March through April.
Families headed to Mid-Michigan can catch a similar spring spectacle at Dow Gardens’ Butterflies in Bloom in Midland. Held in the Dow Conservatory, the exhibit typically runs March into April (the 2026 window is March 6–April 19), with daily emergences in the chrysalis house that wow kids and adults alike.
Up north, plan ahead for Mackinac Island, which has two butterfly attractions and a longer summer season. Wings of Mackinac (on Surrey Hill) is open roughly May–September and showcases butterflies in a bright, greenhouse-style setting with easy stroller access. The Original Butterfly House & Insect World (near Main Street) adds a walkthrough insect museum alongside its tropical garden—great for budding entomologists.

Greater Traverse City adds a twist with the Grand Traverse Butterfly House & Bug Zoo in Williamsburg. It blends a warm, walkthrough butterfly garden with a kid-forward bug zoo (think stick insects, scorpions, exotic beetles and roaches) and typically runs May 1 through early September.
Families exploring the Thumb can seek out the Port Austin Butterfly House & Garden, a seasonal stop that pairs nectar plants with free-flying natives; it’s a nice add-on to beach days and kayak trips around Turnip Rock. Check for current hours before you go.
For a spring learning tie-in, Michigan State University’s 4-H Children’s Gardens in East Lansing host “Butterflies in the Garden” mid-March through late May most years—perfect for field-trip-style visits with interpretive staff and close-up looks at chrysalides.
With a little planning—and a sweater you can shed in the tropics—Michigan’s butterfly houses turn spring into a full-color family adventure.
