Market Day

A season of farmers markets across Michigan

Michigan’s farmers markets aren’t just a summer tradition—some of the best operate year-round, offering a reliable mix of fresh produce, prepared foods, and local flavor no matter the season.

In many communities, they function as both food source and gathering place, where weekly shopping blends easily into a morning or afternoon out—and for visitors, an easy way to get a feel for a place.

In Detroit, Eastern Market stands as one of the oldest and largest public markets in the country. Dating back to the 19th century, the sprawling district now covers more than 40 acres and draws thousands of visitors on peak Saturdays, blending historic sheds with a lively mix of produce vendors, specialty foods, and prepared fare that reflect the city’s diverse food culture.

Across the state in Grand Rapids, Fulton Street Farmers Market has been operating since 1922. With hundreds of vendors rotating through the market each year and a winter season that keeps it active beyond the growing months, it remains a cornerstone of the city’s food culture and a dependable stop for both staples and seasonal finds.

In Flint, the Flint Farmers’ Market offers a fully indoor experience, open multiple days a week. Established in 1905 and reimagined in a modern downtown space, it’s as much a gathering place as it is a place to shop, with vendors ranging from produce and meat to baked goods, coffee, and international foods.

The Ann Arbor Farmers Market, operating since 1919 in the Kerrytown district of Ann Arbor, brings a similar mix of year-round access and seasonal energy. It pairs farm-fresh goods with artisan products, plants, and prepared foods, making it an easy addition to a weekend visit—or a quick stop between shops and restaurants nearby.

Nearly every Michigan community has a weekly farmers market in the summer, showcasing everything the state does best—from berries and cherries to late-season corn. While most are seasonal, a few are regularly counted among the state’s best. Holland’s market traces its roots back more than a century, known for its vibrant produce and flower displays, while Marquette’s downtown market reflects the Upper Peninsula’s short but productive growing season along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Whether indoors or out, farmers markets across the state offer more than just ingredients—they offer a way into Michigan’s communities, one stall at a time.
